Leadership and the Board at GracePoint
GracePoint is part of the Wesleyan denomination in which leadership in a local church consists of two main groups: the staff, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the church, including implementing all the various ministries that take place; and, the board (called the LBA, Local Board of Administration) which is made up of elected elders and deacons. The elders have an oversight role in the spiritual formation side of the church. They provide an accountability group for the staff and they are part of the vision setting process of the church. The deacons (trustees) are responsible for the facilities. They plan, organize and oversee the maintenance and improvements of our facilities.
According to The Discipline of the Wesleyan Church (a handbook addressing the organization, positions and doctrine of the denomination), the lead pastor is the chair of the board and is the only staff member who has a vote on the board. I've never used this option to vote, reasoning that, if the vote is so close mine would be needed to make a decision, then that matter needs to be tabled until a greater agreement is reached. An LBA member is chosen by the two boards to be the vice-chair; ours is currently Jim Merritt. Jim calls the Elder meetings to order and runs that group through their month's agenda. Don Dykhouse has been elected as the head trustee and he runs the Deacon meetings.
These two boards meet separately each month on the second Monday night but they overlap for an hour of discipleship time headed up by Pastor Aaron. Our desire is to grow in our walk with Jesus and grow in Christian leadership. This development time has become something we all really look forward to each month.
I thank God for these board members who are willing to serve GracePoint. It is great to work with a staff and board whose heart is to serve Jesus and to glorify His name. Please keep the staff and board in your prayers.
In Jesus' Love,
Pastor Steve
